Mission – |
To rebuild human dignity of emancipated slaves by providing shelter, coaching to self-sufficiency, and emulating the kindness and empowerment of Jesus Christ. |
Goal – |
Our goal at Freedom House is to provide housing, food and clothing for the newly free. We will also address the unique needs of emancipated victims: |
| Shelter – | A safe place to live where they won’t be found by their former traffickers as well as food, clothing and other basic needs. |
| Care – | Ongoing care services to assist survivors in the integration process and coordination with other local service providers in the delivery of legal, medical and psychological care. |
Psychological and Spiritual Help
The effects of being trafficked are long lasting. Often victims may live with severe medical and psychological problems. Most victims suffer from chronic symptoms of emotional trauma, fear, depression and despair. When victims are forced to engage in criminal activity or when they are trafficked to a location where they cannot speak or understand the language, they experience feelings of isolation, and low self-esteem. Without intervention and a safe and secure place to stay, many victims remain in the cycle of violence.
Victims of human trafficking suffer from a combination of psychological traumas. Survivors may experience feelings of abandonment, betrayal, post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression, anxiety, and detachment.
Survivors need special care and time to heal. At Freedom House, we want to show each person she is valued and that her dignity is worth rebuilding, upholding and protecting.
Life Skills
Some survivors need life skills training. For instance, survivors may need to learn how to use the public transportation system, access education, employment and social services or obtain appropriate government identification cards. Freedom House will provide a myriad of life skills training with the help of coaches. Instruction will include assistance with driving, shopping, use of public transportation, social outings and more.
Language & Literacy
Survivors of trafficking in the United States include both foreign and domestic citizens. For those who do not speak English, Freedom House will continue to provide training in language skills. Skills to speak, write and understand English are critical to a successful integration in this country.
Job Skills & Placement
Survivors need the means to support themselves. Freedom House will provide job skills training and will assist in the job search for survivors.
A Way Home
Survivors need to determine where to go after rescue. Regardless of their citizenship, they may not be able to return home. Domestic survivors may not be able to return home. Foreign survivors may choose to remain in this country or return to their home country. While they weigh difficult decisions, Freedom House will provide a sanctuary that will give them the space to understand their options and make the right decision.
